What’s an RSS feed?  RSS feed has been around for a while, allowing the technology to influence most Internet tools online.  RSS Feed has also improved upon current Internet tools by offering a more streamlined version of the technology, which is very useful while studying content online.

What is RSS?

RSS (Rich Site Summary) is a format for delivering regularly changing web content. These may be news, custom specified content and updates from area of interest to you. RSS feeds are very useful today as they simplify searching for information in the Internet. Looking for information from site to site can be time consuming and tiring. RSS feeds however simplify this job for you as you get all the information in one place. Depending on your needs, you find plenty of RSS feeds that can constantly provide you with information you find yourself requiring on a daily basis saving you the time and effort of perusing the different sites looking for such information.  They serve as a way for advertising, spreading information as well as updating interested parties in the business community.

RSS is text documents with fundamental info — information that user requests. These files can be text, audio, or video-based. This stripped-down content is then plugged into a “feed reader” or an interface which quickly transforms the RSS text documents to a flow of the most recent updates from all over the internet.

What Can We Do With RSS?

As net content became more complicated, so did RSS documents, which adopted video images, and much more, but in a format for loading and compatibility across all feed subscribers. So they provide the most current content directly to your device. This approach enables users to produce feeds full of updates the exact way that they prefer to see them.

RSS Feed allows many news-related sites, weblogs and other online publishers syndicate their content.  RSS feed technology was developed to allow website contents to be syndicated in order to be used on other sites.  One benefit is that content comes to you in one centralized location.  It allows your content to be promoted on other blogs and sites.  Using this method, bloggers can get plugged in to a large number of people.

WHY USE AN RSS FEED?

RSS (Rich Site Summary) also known as (Really Simple Syndication) is based on standard format of web feeds that consistently publish information like blogs, breaking news, headlines for the day, etc. RSS feeds enhance the user’s experience while surfing the internet. The user doesn’t have to visit the website for updates; rather they can get them at his disposal through RSS feeds. When a user subscribes the RSS of a website, their browser gathers the updates and transmit to user.

RSS allows the user to collect as much data as they want from around the web, without fear of censorship or social media feed manipulation tricks. When an RSS feed pulls an article, podcast, blog, or file, that file is freely accessible by the user afterwards, and cannot be altered by any content providers. With RSS the user chooses the sources, and the user is responsible for making sure they are reliable and trustworthy.

  • Choose and setup a news reader:  you will need an RSS news reader as a platform that retrieves and organizes all the web content such as blogs, news, podcasts, or video.  There are plenty of name brand RSS news readers offered by companies such as Yahoo, Google, or by utilizing browsers with built in capabilities such as FireFox.
  • Finding Content:  choosing content from an RSS feed is simple, start by downloading a news reader.  Typically, a website will have a symbol indicating that an RSS feed is available for that site. Simply browse to your favorite website, and search around for an RSS feed icon or link. If the website doesn’t produce an RSS feed, maybe you can convince them to start one!
  • Adding content:  Go to the website of your choosing and click the RSS feed symbol.  Then copy the web address and paste into the RSS news reader.  If using a browser such as FireFox, which has RSS feed technology built in to the browser, simply click on the RSS feed symbol and follow the prompts from the website.

In Internet Explorer, the RSS icon is in the toolbar. When you visit a site that has an RSS feed, it will turn orange.

In the latest versions of Firefox, the RSS icon – known within Firefox as the ‘Subscribe’ button – no longer appears automatically at the end of the address bar. To put it on your bookmarks toolbar, click View, then Toolbars, then customize. Scroll down until you see the ‘Subscribe’ button. Drag it to the bookmarks toolbar, where it will automatically park itself at one end.

To view RSS feeds in Chrome, an extension is required. A popular extension is RSS Feed Reader, it is lightweight and easy to use, and should do well for most users.

To subscribe to an RSS feed, all you need to do is click on the icon when you’re on a website that has such a feed. This will take you to a page where you can subscribe to it.

  • RSS feed reading:  after configuring desired content, the RSS news reader will begin receiving content and will appear as story titles.  There is an option to read the full story by clicking on the story.
